 L’ex convento di San Lorenzo in Bibbiena è un complesso edilizio attualmente non utilizzato e che la proprietà intende alienare. Il Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali consente la vendita dell’intero immobile senza possibilità di frazionamento dello stesso.

L’Amministrazione Comunale di Bibbiena intende promuovere l’interesse di Istituzioni e Università italiane o straniere per l’utilizzo dell’ex convento di San Lorenzo come sede per stages e programmi di studio, specialmente riguardanti discipline artistiche e umanistiche. La sede può comprendere spazi per attività didattiche, laboratori, alloggio e mensa.

E’ possibile individuare la disponibilità di ulteriori spazi all’interno di alcuni edifici del Centro Storico di Bibbiena per eventualmente potenziare la disponibilità dell’ex convento di San Lorenzo.

Bibbiena è una piccola e sicura città toscana di circa 11.000 abitanti con numerose attività culturali e un’importante tradizione artistica radicata nel Medioevo e nel fiorire dell’architettura settecentesca. Bibbiena è il principale centro del Casentino, una valle di alto pregio paesaggistico, naturale, e storico: in una cornice di monti boscosi, castelli medioevali, pievi romaniche, percorsa dal tratto più montano del fiume Arno (il fiume di Firenze e Pisa). Da non trascurare la tradizione gastronomica, folkloristica e di produzione artigianale che caratterizza Bibbiena e l’intero Casentino.

In questo ambiente, situato tra l’altro a breve distanza da Firenze, Arezzo e Siena, gli studenti in discipline umanistiche possono unire il proficuo studio a stretto contatto con testimonianze storico-artistiche di altissimo pregio, al condividere lo stile di vita di una tipica comunità italiana.

The former convent of San Lorenzo in Bibbiena is a currently not used building complex and that the property wishes to alienate.  The Ministry for the Cultural Assets and Activities concurs the sale of the whole building, without possibility of division of the same one.

The Municipality of Bibbiena means to promote the interest of Italian or foreign Institutions and Universities for the use of the former convent of San Lorenzo like a center for stages and programs of study, especially regarding artistic and humanistic disciplines.  The center can comprise spaces for didactic activities, laboratories, lodging and catering. 

It is possible to find the availability of ulterior spaces inside some buildings of the Historical Center of Bibbiena in order eventually to upgrade the availability of the former convent of San Lorenzo .

Bibbiena is a small and safe Tuscany town of approximately 11.000 inhabitants with numerous cultural activities and an important artistic tradition developed from the Middle Ages and from the blooming of architecture of eighteenth century.  Bibbiena is the main center of the Casentino, a valley of valuable landscape, nature and history,  in a wooded mount frame, Middle Age castles, Romanesque Pievi , crossed by the first reach of the Arno river (the river of Florence and Pisa).  Not to neglect the gastronomica tradition, folklore and of handicraft production that characterizes Bibbiena and  the whole Casentino.  In this atmosphere, situated to short distance from Florence, Arezzo and Siena, the students in humanistic disciplines can join the profitable study to tight contact with historical-artistic testimoniances of very high value, and share the lifestyle of a typical Italian community.

La Chiesa di San Lorenzo, edificata su un precedente oratorio, ha assunto le forme attuali nel Quattrocento, quando fu ingrandita e fu avviata la costruzione del Convento per ospitare i Frati Minori Francescani. La facciata, con due rosoni, è stata restaurata di recente. L’interno, ripartito in tre navate, ha subìto interventi successivi al primitivo impianto. Il coro dietro l’altare è del Seicento, mentre il tabernacolo è del secolo seguente e conserva due notevoli terracotte invetriate poste una di fronte all’altra: a destra la Natività di Andrea della Robbia e a sinistra la Deposizione del Cristo.  Il Chiostro del convento, costruito nella prima metà del XVII secolo, ha forme snelle con agili colonne in parte corrose dal tempo.

Il convento vero e proprio è costituito da numerosi vani di vario utilizzo (camere, cucina, refettorio, locali tecnici, biblioteca, aule ecc.) disposti attorno al chiostro su tre livelli: piano seminterrato, piano terra e piano primo. Oltre ad un giardino pensile che si affaccia sulla valle dell’Arno.

The church of San Lorenzo was built on a previous oratory and got its present aspect in the 15th century when it was enlarged and the construction of the Convent housing the Minor Franciscan friars began. Its façade with two rose windows has been recently restored. The internal space divided into one nave and two side aisles, was subject to later works on the original structure. The choir behind the altar dates back to the 17th century, whereas the shrine dates from the subsequent century and contains two remarkable glazed terracotta works facing each other: the Nativity by Andrea della Robbia on the right-hand side and the Deposition from the Cross on the left-hand side. The convent’s cloister built in the first half of the 17th century has got a slender shape with slim columns partially worn away by the weather, which has also damaged most of the frescoes in the arches.

The convent itself is constituted of numerous rooms of varied uses (bedrooms, kitchen, refectory, library, classrooms, technical rooms etc.)  decided around the chiostro on three levels: half underground floor, ground floor and first floor. Last but not least an hanging garden over the river Arno valley.
